View the Pomeroy SlideshowPomeroy welcomes visitors and new residents. Like many Midwestern small towns, we were founded to support the agricultural community surrounding us. With progress comes change and as farming became more mechanized, rural populations declined. Pomeroy still supports the rich agricultural production of the surrounding area with ever increasing grain storage and handling facilities. Thinning population has moved most consumer support to larger retail hubs. In our case, Fort Dodge and Storm Lake are the largest providers of jobs and day to day retail needs. Just like you'll notice in most small towns, the Main Street businesses in Pomeroy are mostly closed. The life cycle of any retail area begins by providing groceries, clothing and other basic necessities to a local population. In both major cities and small towns population shifts cause the next step where retail businesses are replaced by service businesses. Soon "antique", then consignment, then pawn shops and finally warehousing operations fill the large buildings. With luck, before all the old buildings are demolished, the artists move in. You'll witness this pattern in countless major metropolitan areas. Omaha's "Old Market" and Denver's "Lodo" and The Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District are just a few examples. In Pomeroy the arts phase has begun. Byron's is a place where, in days gone by, farmers would congregate on rainy days to drink beer, play cards and gripe about the weather. Now, on many Sunday evenings people sit at the same tables and listen to Americana, Folk, Blues and World Music performed by artists from all over the United States. Digerdoos (Australian long tubular wind instruments) and Cajon Drums (Cuban box drums) have been enjoyed at Byron's along with more traditional guitar, keyboard and percussion driven groups. Just up the street is The Kaleidoscope Factory. Looking in the front window you'll often see a gnome-like, corporate escapee, older gentlemen turning wood on a lathe and then fashioning kaleidoscopes from those turnings. Wooden trains, wooden puzzles, spurtles, dibbers and magic pixie dust dispensers are a few of his offerings. A sign maker/musician/auctioneer occupies one of the off-main buildings. Here's the location of the arts, entertainment & historic district map If you're thinking of relocating, Pomeroy is midway between two regional shopping centers, each around a half hour away. Storm Lake and Fort Dodge. Less than 10 minutes away is a lake with half million dollar homes on its shores. A modest home in Pomeroy will also put you close to the boating, swimming, golf, hiking, bicycling and other recreational opportunities at Twin Lakes.
